Semi Off Road or Off Road: What Actually Matters?, Sunrise Caravans blog article (Guides & Tips)

An off road sticker is not a permission slip, mate. It does not tell you where a caravan can safely go. Start with the trip you want to do, then check what the particular van is built and approved to handle.

    Start with your roads

Mostly bitumen with occasional maintained gravel is a different job from remote tracks with sustained corrugations. Road conditions change with weather, and an off road badge does not make a flooded crossing safe.

Write down where you reckon you will go. Ask about the actual access roads, not just the campsite photos. The photo never shows the whole story.

Compare the build, not the label

Ask for the suspension name and its operating limits. Check chassis design, ground clearance, tyres, underbody protection and how tanks and wiring are secured.

Semi off road and off road labels are not a promise that every van in a category has the same equipment. Independent suspension alone does not settle the question either.

    Check weight and power separately

More equipment can mean more weight. Compare the compliance plate, payload and loaded towing limits with your actual tow vehicle. Use a public weighbridge to check the loaded combination.

Off road does not automatically mean off grid. Battery capacity, charging, solar and water storage need their own comparison against how you camp.

    Get the limits in writing

Ask which roads the manufacturer permits and which use is excluded from its warranty. Check your insurance separately. A salesperson's broad promise is not a substitute for either document.

    FAQs

    Finance & towing questions

The questions Brisbane, Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast buyers ask us most.

Caravan finance is typically a secured loan over 3 to 7 years, with the van itself as security. We arrange finance through our partner Finetic, who compare lenders for competitive rates on new and pre loved vans. Pre approval takes your budget guesswork away before you shop, and you can model repayments with the finance calculator on any van page.

Not always. Zero deposit finance is available for many buyers, depending on the lender and your circumstances. Putting 10 to 20% down usually reduces your repayments and total interest, so it's worth comparing both scenarios before you commit.

Compare the caravan's ATM (Aggregate Trailer Mass) with your vehicle's braked towing capacity, then check you still have room in your GVM, GCM and towball download limits once the van is loaded. Our towing calculator does the maths for you, and our Burpengary team will sanity check the combination before you buy. Every van comes with its weighbridge docket, so you know its real weight, not a brochure guess. Use a public weighbridge to check the loaded combination.

New vans come with the manufacturer's warranty (terms vary by brand and model, and we handle claims in our own workshop), current build standards and the chance to spec your own layout. Quality pre loved vans cost less and often come with upgrades already fitted, though pre loved stock is available from time to time only. Ask us what's coming in. Either way we'll walk you through the trade offs with no pressure.
