The Complete Towing Guide for Beginners

Sunrise Caravans6 April 20262 min read

G'day, future road warriors! Steve here from Sunrise Caravans in Burpengary, ready to chat about one of the most common questions we get: "How do I actually tow one of these beauties?"

It's completely normal to feel a bit daunted at first. But with a bit of knowledge, practice, and the right setup, you'll be towing like a seasoned pro in no time.

    1. Know Your Weights

This is the most critical aspect of safe towing. Here's what you need to understand:

    • Tare Mass: The weight of your caravan empty of water, gas, and belongings.
    • Aggregated Trailer Mass (ATM): Maximum laden weight including all your gear.
    • Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM): Maximum allowable weight of your tow vehicle.
    • Gross Combined Mass (GCM): Maximum total weight of tow vehicle AND caravan combined.
    • Tow Ball Download: The weight exerted on the tow ball. Aim for 7 to 10% of the ATM.

Always check the compliance plate on both your tow vehicle and caravan.

    2. Essential Accessories

    • Weight Distribution Hitch (WDH): For caravans over 1500kg, a WDH distributes tow ball weight evenly across all axles.
    • Electric Brake Controller: Essential for any caravan over 750kg.
    • Extension Mirrors: Your standard car mirrors won't cut it. You need wider vision to see past the caravan.
    • Reversing Camera: Makes parking and reversing significantly less stressful.

    3. Practice Makes Perfect

Before your big trip, find a large open space and practice:

    • Turning: Get a feel for the extra length. Take wider turns.
    • Braking: Practice smooth, controlled braking.
    • Reversing: Start with straight lines, then gentle turns. Small steering inputs make a big difference.

    4. Pre Departure Checks

A quick walk around before hitting the road:

    • Check tyre pressures on both vehicle and caravan
    • Test all indicator, brake, and tail lights
    • Double check the hitch is securely latched
    • Safety chains crossed and attached
    • Jockey wheel and stabiliser legs fully raised
    • All windows and hatches closed and locked
    • Everything secured inside the van

    5. On the Road

    • Take it easy: Drive smoothly, avoid sudden moves
    • Maintain distance: Allow much more braking distance
    • Use lower gears on hills to prevent brake overheating
    • Be aware of wind and passing trucks
    • Pull over regularly to check coupling, tyres, and wheel bearings

    Finance & towing questions

The questions Brisbane, Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast buyers ask us most.

Compare the caravan's ATM (Aggregate Trailer Mass) with your vehicle's braked towing capacity, then check you still have room in your GVM, GCM and towball download limits once the van is loaded. Our towing calculator does the maths for you, and our Burpengary team will sanity check the combination before you buy. Every van comes with its weighbridge docket, so you know its real weight, not a brochure guess. Use a public weighbridge to check the loaded combination.

Tare is the van's empty weight as it leaves the factory, ATM is the maximum legal loaded weight, and payload is the difference: everything you can pack, including water, gas, batteries and gear. Aim to leave several hundred kilograms of payload spare so you're not overweight once the van is travel ready.

Caravan finance is typically a secured loan over 3 to 7 years, with the van itself as security. We arrange finance through our partner Finetic, who compare lenders for competitive rates on new and pre loved vans. Pre approval takes your budget guesswork away before you shop, and you can model repayments with the finance calculator on any van page.
