Buying Your First Caravan: What to Look For
G'day, future caravanners! Steve here from Sunrise Caravans. Buying your first caravan is one of the most exciting decisions you'll make — but it can also be overwhelming with so many options out there. Let me give you my no BS guide to getting it right.
1. Know Your Tow Vehicle First
Before you even look at caravans, know what your vehicle can tow. Check your:
- Maximum towing capacity (braked)
- Gross Combined Mass (GCM)
- Tow ball download limit
There's no point falling in love with a 3 tonne van if your SUV can only handle 2.5 tonnes. We see this mistake all the time.
2. How Will You Use It?
Be honest with yourself about how you'll actually use your caravan:
- Weekend warrior: A smaller pop top or compact van might be perfect.
- School holidays: Look for family friendly layouts with bunks.
- Grey nomad / full time travel: Invest in a larger, well equipped van with good storage and off grid capability.
- Off road adventures: You'll need a proper semi or full off road van with independent suspension, stone guards, and beefier construction.
3. Layout Matters More Than You Think
Spend time in the van. Sit at the dinette, lie on the bed, open every cupboard. Think about:
- Bed position: Do you want a rear bedroom for privacy or an east west bed for easier access?
- Bathroom: Ensuite vs central bathroom. Full shower vs combo shower toilet.
- Kitchen: Inside cooking space, bench room, oven vs microwave only.
- Storage: You'll always need more than you think!
4. New vs Used
Both have their merits:
New:
- Full warranty and support
- Latest features and technology
- You choose the spec and layout
- Finance options available
Used:
- Lower upfront cost
- Someone else has worn the depreciation
- Check for water damage, tyre age, and appliance condition
- Get an independent inspection before buying
5. Construction Quality
Not all caravans are created equal. Look for:
- Chassis: Hot dipped galvanised is best for rust resistance
- Cladding: Composite panels are more durable than aluminium
- Insulation: Important for both hot and cold climates
- Suspension: Independent suspension handles rough roads better
- Windows: Double glazed windows help with insulation
6. The Essentials Checklist
Make sure your first van has:
- Electric brakes
- Adequate fresh water tank (150L minimum)
- Hot water system
- Good ventilation (roof hatches, windows)
- LED lighting throughout
- 12V charging points and USB outlets
- Spare tyre
7. Don't Forget the Extras
Budget for these additional costs:
- Tow bar and wiring on your vehicle
- Weight distribution hitch
- Electric brake controller
- Extension mirrors
- Insurance
- Registration
