Buying a Caravan in Brisbane: The 2026 Local Buyer's Guide
Brisbane is one of the best cities in Australia to base a caravan lifestyle out of. You are a short tow from the Sunshine Coast, the Gold Coast hinterland, the Scenic Rim, and the long run west into the outback. But buying the right van for a Brisbane driveway is a bit different to buying one in Melbourne or Perth. Here is what we walk every local buyer through at our Burpengary yard.
1. Match the van to your tow vehicle first
Southeast Queensland is full of dual cab utes and mid size 4WDs. Before you fall in love with a 22 footer, get the paperwork out:
- Kerb weight, GVM, GCM and tow rating of your vehicle (all on the compliance plate).
- Tare and ATM of the caravan you like.
- Leave a real world buffer — a fully loaded family van is usually 300 to 500 kg heavier than tare once you add water, gas, food, and gear.
Our towing calculator will flag red/amber/green combos in a few seconds, and we will double check it in person before you commit.
2. Think about where you actually park it
Brisbane blocks are getting smaller. Before you buy, measure:
- Driveway length and any overhanging eaves
- Side access width (watch for aircon units and rainwater tanks)
- Council rules on parking a van on the verge (most Brisbane councils are strict)
If storage on site is not an option, we can point you to secure caravan storage yards in Burpengary, Narangba and Caboolture.
3. Off grid capability matters more up here
Queensland free camps and national parks reward a van that can sit off grid for 3 to 5 days. Look for:
- 200Ah+ lithium (or a proper 12V lead setup you can upgrade later)
- 400W+ of solar on the roof
- A DC DC charger so the tug tops the batteries on the drive
- A decent water carry (180L+ fresh, plus a grey tank)
We fit 12V, 24V and 48V off grid systems in our workshop — you can start basic and upgrade later.
4. Weekend shakedown trips from Brisbane
Before you head to the Cape or across the Nullarbor, take the van somewhere close for a night or two:
- Bribie Island — 45 min north, powered sites and beach access
- Lake Somerset / Kirkleagh — 90 min west, great free/low cost setup
- Boreen Point on Lake Cootharaba — 2 hr north, easy tow
- O'Reilly's / Canungra area — 90 min south for the hinterland run
A shakedown trip finds every rattle, leak, and forgotten item before it matters.
5. Finance, trade in and rego in Queensland
- Queensland caravan rego is currently one of the cheapest in the country for private use.
- Trade ins are welcome — we handle the payout on any existing loan.
- Finetic can pre approve most Brisbane buyers within 24 to 48 hours, and our finance calculator on every van gives you a realistic weekly/fortnightly repayment before you enquire.
